Generative AI has become an indispensable tool in my practice. While it continues the trajectory of conventional cameras and editing software, it also marks a break: it goes beyond mere recording to rewrite the relationship between events and their representation. Where the camera recorded events, generative AI renders “details that did not exist,” or “details that might have existed.” Its output is both fiction and a blueprint, possessing a dual nature that can shape future reality.

At the core of this mechanism is the compression of vast amounts of training data into a high-dimensional latent space with tens of thousands of dimensions, from which plausible images are derived through algorithmic statistical inference. Through zero-shot inference, it extends our ability to “make the unknown plausibly visible” without referring to specific prior experience, pushing visual inference beyond the boundaries of human cognition. The portraits generated here unsettle the concept of the self-portrait, presenting an image that is both self and other. A portrait is no longer a fixed reproduction, but a fluctuating presence that moves back and forth across the boundary between self and other.

I cannot help seeing a historical continuity between this technology and nuclear development. Just as nuclear technology has a dual nature, as an energy source and a weapon, generative AI is both a tool for creation and something that carries the potential for control and destruction. The arena of AI development is no longer limited to competition between states; it has shifted to a development race that also involves enormous technology companies whose power rivals that of nations. Amid the new Cold War between the United States and China, AI has become a means of deciding the next contest for hegemony, and Japan, too, is positioned on its geopolitical front line. Technology is no longer neutral: it is put to use within an order of power.

Just as the chain reaction of nuclear fission, once begun, could not be stopped, the advance of AI development can no longer be halted. Humanity has already entered an irreversible domain and has no choice but to confront its consequences with urgency.
