After the Exhibition: The Membrane of Reality and Fiction

[ Text published in the exhibition flyer, 2022.2 ]

The room I rented next to Azumatei Project had an old, ill-fitting shutter at its entrance. Across its grimy gray slats, the words "Shida Tosō" (志田塗装) had been written in white paint, now yellowed with age.

Inside, the room retained the atmosphere of the Shōwa era, as though time had stopped. The ceiling and walls were painted a flaxen color, while the lower part of the walls, from the floor to waist height, was painted walnut brown. Here and there, dark-brown layers of older paint remained. In the traces left by successive repainting, one could discern the afterimages of shelves and office desks that had once occupied the room.

Painting is a human activity undertaken to renew a space, to protect a structure from deterioration, and to keep a living environment clean. Seen on a larger scale, this activity becomes landscape and gives shape to the city.

Yokohama, where Western painting techniques were introduced with the opening of the port, is said to be the birthplace of the modern painting and coating trade in Japan. One day, I casually asked the landlord about Shida Tosō. He told me that no painting contractor by that name had ever occupied the room. I was stunned by that wholly unexpected remark.

In Hozumi Ikan's Naniwa Miyage, Chikamatsu Monzaemon's theory of art, known as the "theory of the membrane between fiction and reality" (kyojitsu himaku), is explained as follows: "Chikamatsu replied: Art is something that exists in the membrane between the real and the fictional. […] Would it offer any delight otherwise? This is what is meant by the space of the membrane. Fictional and yet not fiction, real and yet not real — it is within this in-between that delight resides."

In this exhibition, taking as my point of departure a sensation that ought to have been visible all along, I construct the exhibition by performing Shida Tosō, in an attempt to form a new membrane between reality and fiction in the present.

Kazuyoshi Sakai, artist

[ Written after the exhibition ]

This text was written retrospectively, after the exhibition had ended. The conception set out in the flyer — to construct the exhibition by performing Shida Tosō and to form a new membrane between reality and fiction in the present — did not, in the end, remain confined to the exhibition itself.

"Performing" did not take the form of a performance staged in the gallery. It became a sustained act, undertaken as a role. Shida Tosō towels were distributed at the venue, and I accepted commissions for painting work as its agent. The website launched during the exhibition continued to operate after the show had ended, and inquiries and visits to the "office" established in a corner of the Isezakichō Center Building continue to this day.

In this way, Shida Tosō became not a work to be viewed, but an entity responded to within a network of relations, its reality judged anew each time it is encountered, and one that continues to operate. Just as painting renews a surface while simultaneously concealing and preserving the time and traces beneath it, Shida Tosō also operates as a layer in which the locus of action, judgment, and responsibility remains unfixed.

This theme, borrowed from Chikamatsu Monzaemon's theory of the membrane between fiction and reality, rests on the recognition that distinctions — between fiction and reality, author and viewer, exhibition and everyday life — are not fixed boundaries, but a thin membrane in constant motion.

Shida Tosō was not a device for exposing truth through fiction. It was an attempt to set the membrane itself in motion, without naming it, in a place where fiction and reality already overlap and the distinction between them has ceased to function, revealing what we find ourselves treating as real.

The Position of the Agent

English Text

In this project, I have consistently positioned myself not as the author of Shida Tosō but as its "agent." This is not a mask to hide a personal name. It is a position from which to make visible the very circuit by which narration, action, judgment, and responsibility come to be gathered into a particular "subject."

The evaluation of an artwork often converges, in the end, on the question "who made it?" The work is filed under the author's name, and its meaning is explained by tracing it back to that person's interiority. In Shida Tosō, I suspended this circuit in advance. I am at once the one who "conceived" Shida Tosō and a single "function" operating under its name.

An agent is not a substitute for a subject. It is the very position that provisionally brings a subject into being. Prior to the proper name of whoever stands there, what operates is the fact that the position has been occupied and has functioned. When I respond as the agent of Shida Tosō, my judgment is received not as my personal opinion but as "a response by Shida Tosō." The subject arises not within me but within the relation. Here I am at once a subject and not a subject — and it is precisely this contradiction that drives the project.

This position, then, does not negate authorship. Rather, it is a form for taking on, at the level of practice, authorship as a "structure" that is always summoned by an external demand and assigned after the fact.

Why I Used Generative AI from an Early Stage

English Text

I began incorporating generative AI into my practice at an early stage not out of an interest in new technology. I did so to prevent authorship from being gathered back into a single origin — myself.

At the time, generative AI was often spoken of as a "tool for efficiency," or as a "copilot" assisting human creative work. For me, however, it was not a substitute for the authorial subject, but a "device" for disrupting in advance the circuit by which judgment, choice, and imagery are short-circuited back into my own interiority. Once AI is interposed, the figures and language that appear in the work can no longer be traced easily to a single intention. Choices emerge without a clear origin; judgments are dispersed, or left suspended, as the project proceeds.

This is neither a matter of replacing the artist with a machine nor of claiming that AI possesses consciousness. Generative AI is used to interrupt, at a structural level, the modern premise that expression must always issue from a human subject. If the "agent" of #02 is a form that unsettles the position of the subject, then generative AI is a form that unsettles the origin of judgment. For Shida Tosō to operate not within the confines of the exhibition but amid actual commissions and negotiations, a state was needed in which things could proceed even while authorship remained undetermined. By inserting a distance between intention and result, generative AI produced that state.

What matters is not that AI guarantees neutrality or objectivity. On the contrary, at the very moment a system appears to function "convincingly," it lays bare how easily meaning, responsibility, and authority come to be delegated. In this sense, generative AI is not a symbol of the future. It is a mirror that reflects, in nonhuman form, a reality already unfolding: institutions and structures are already speaking, judging, and acting in our stead.

To use generative AI, then, is less an attempt to expand human creativity than a practice of asking what kind of structure the very concept of "creativity" has rested upon all along.

Fiction That Operates Outside the Exhibition

English Text

Shida Tosō was never, from the start, conceived as a project that would remain contained within the exhibition space. It was designed as a "structure" that operates beyond the gallery, within the actual social relations of commissions, negotiations, and labor.

What is at stake here is not a choice between "real" and "fictional." It is whether it functions as a body that actually receives commissions, responds, produces results, and leaves traces in society. As I noted in #01, even after the exhibition ended, the project did not return to a neutral state. At times it took on work in a manner indistinguishable from that of a real contractor, met expectations, and generated real consequences. At that stage, fiction shed the layer of "expression" altogether and became a framework that operates in practical terms.

What came into view there was this: fiction does not necessarily need to be believed. Whether people "believe" Shida Tosō to be real is not decisive for its functioning. So long as it has enough structural credibility to initiate a response or a transaction — even without being believed to be true — and is built into the social systems of trust, labor, and exchange, fiction begins to operate as smoothly as reality, at times more so.

At this point Shida Tosō is treated no longer as "a work to be viewed" but as "an entity to be responded to." Judgments are made without returning to the author's intention, and responsibility circulates among systems without a clearly identifiable subject.

Once a name or a surface is given, how swiftly a story turns into action. What Shida Tosō takes on is that very turn. Fiction becomes real not by being believed, but by being responded to.

The Human as an Operational Fiction

English Text

The experience of Shida Tosō "operating without any substance," in turn, compels us to ask under what conditions we ourselves exist. We believe ourselves to be "subjects" who hold, within, an unwavering will. Yet just as Shida Tosō, once given forms such as a name, towels, and a website, began to operate on its own, might we humans too be occupied and set into operation by roles prepared in advance, by social demands, or by the story called a "name"?

Generative AI did not newly create this structure. It merely cast light, from the nonhuman side, on an aspect that was already there: that humans have long functioned within systems in ways similar to AI. Generative AI has neither intention nor feeling, yet it responds to input, plays a role, and returns a result. Humans, too, respond to the expectations around them, take on the roles they are given, and often act without ever returning to their own interiority.

That said, "operating" here does not mean behaving obediently within a system. Rebellion, deviation, refusal — these too are acts that arise as one kind of response to structure. Humans do not act freely from outside structure; through friction with it, they generate reactions that carry both affirmation and negation. The heat of that friction may well be the true nature of what we have called "will."

As with the agent seen in #02, subjectivity is not something discovered from within, but a position assigned from outside, within relations, and taken on only after the fact. If so, then Shida Tosō is not a mere metaphor: by operating without substance of its own, it has thrown back at us the fact that we ourselves already live as an operational fiction. The human is not a self-contained subject but a being that is continually assigned to something beyond itself, responds to it, and in whom — whether it wishes to or not — action comes to occur.

Silence as a Condition

English Text

Silence is often understood as "the unspoken," or as "a lack." But in my practice, silence is not a void left behind by the failure of speech; it is a "condition" that exists before speech ever comes into being.

If Shida Tosō was an attempt to set a subject with no substance into operation through nothing but a name and responses, then what is it that slips through that operation? Just as painting covers a surface while never entirely erasing the traces beneath it, translation, recording, and generative AI alike — while converting everything into language or information — always leave behind something that cannot be fully converted. Translation is not an act that dissolves silence. It is an act that keeps tracing the perimeter of silence.

Silence is neither a raw material that precedes speech nor a residue left behind after it. It is another layer that persists alongside speech. Correctness and accuracy are, of course, necessary. But they alone cannot take on what cannot be determined, what cannot be said outright. In this layer, wavering itself is held as a state.

What is called for is not a method of making silence speak, but a stance: can we remain with that which stays unspoken?

When a system sets everything into operation and converts it all, silence is the name for the layer that is never fully gathered back into that operation and remains beyond its reach.

After the Loss of the Human Body

English Text

I sometimes imagine what it would be like if the voice or image of my paternal grandfather — who died before I was born — had remained. A survivor of the atomic bombing, in what kind of voice did he speak, and with what gaze did he look upon the world? Had I been able to touch even a fragment of that, perhaps the outline of the absence that lies within me would have grown a little clearer.

While the body decays, there is, to be sure, a kind of "salvation" in the fact that the words and images a person leaves behind can endure as an archive. And yet, here I must stop and think. Is a record — a recording or an image — really the person? Is it not always a fragment cut from a limited point of view, an edited image and nothing more? To "remain" as a record — is that not, rather than preserving the person's truth, to fix outside time a "thin membrane" peeled from the living body?

Into this precarious state of preservation, the technology of generative AI now intervenes — and this fills me with a deep dread.

To take the incomplete fragments of an archive as material, and to have AI fill the gaps and "reconstruct" a new narrative: it appears to bring the dead back to life, yet in truth it is an act that overwrites and paints over the one and only silence left behind in that person's absence. Precisely because the fragment is incomplete, it carries within it the decisive fact that "this person is no longer here." But AI generation covers up that absence with a "plausible whole." So long as it conceals the gap, reconstruction becomes a second, more fundamental "erasure" of the dead.

Just as painting protects a surface through repeated overwriting, the technology of the archive too keeps repainting the image of the dead. But if that overwriting renders invisible even the one and only trace inscribed by the body that once existed, then what are we to call salvation?

To "remain" is not to maintain complete information. It is, rather, to take on — as a "fragment" that no other image can replace — that very incompleteness and silence, just as they are. After the body is lost, speech survives. But when it transforms into a generated thing belonging to no one, we may lose even the one and only proof that the person was once there.

What Cannot Be Delegated

English Text

Modernity came into being by dividing everything up through the operation of "delegation." Labor is parceled out into roles, judgment into professional functions, and responsibility into organizations and institutions. Rather than an individual bearing everything, subjects broken down into functions are connected within a system. Its emblem is the "company," a nonhuman subject (a corporate entity) that makes judgments and enters contracts without emotion or interiority.

That Shida Tosō claims a corporate history — founded in 1874 (Meiji 7) — is no accident. That date coincides with a period in which modern institutions and practices in Japan — companies, banks, shares, bookkeeping, and contracts — were rapidly taking shape while still unsettled.

Shida Tosō, though a fiction, was conceived as an entity embedded within this modern model of the subject. Generative AI has made judgment, choice, and description delegable on an unprecedented scale. But that is merely an extension of modernity. For a long time already, we have lived by entrusting our own thinking and responsibility to external institutions. AI has only carried that tendency to an extreme.

Here a paradox emerges. Even if almost everything becomes delegable, the one thing that cannot be undone — even if it is never disclosed — is the fact that one has delegated.

Even if you entrust a judgment to an algorithm, or deposit responsibility with an organization, the fact that the operation took place remains. This residue is no longer will, nor subjectivity. It is merely the dry fact that "an event has occurred."

The "subject who takes on responsibility," as modernity imagined it, may have been a fiction for forcibly gathering this insoluble residue back into the interiority of a person. But in the face of AI and automated institutions, that apparatus of gathering no longer works well enough.

What remains at the end of delegation is not freedom. However much you hand over, the fact that you handed it over stays on your side. That, precisely, is the one thing that — no matter what institution or machine it passes through — cannot be handed over to anyone.

Responsibility Without a Speaker

English Text

Responsibility is not born only when someone declares, "I take it on." Nor does responsibility arise simply because an event has occurred. Responsibility is the relation that arises when an event that has already happened begins to demand a response — and when the one who is to respond cannot be determined in advance.

For a long time, we have understood responsibility by tying it to an ethics of individual interiority. Who thought it, who decided it, who did it — to answer that question, a "speaking subject" has always been presupposed. But as we saw in #08, modernity is constituted through countless delegations of judgment and action. Organizations, institutions, algorithms, protocols. There, events keep on occurring, and yet a single speaker can no longer be determined.

Even so, responsibility alone does not disappear. It belongs to no one; only the force demanding a response clings to the event and continues to drift among institutions.

In Shida Tosō, I have consistently acted as an agent. This was not in order to evade responsibility. Even in the absence of a speaker, the event goes on demanding a response — and this was the position from which to let precisely that happen. The judgments and responses made in the name of Shida Tosō are not gathered back into my personal intention. But their being "no one's" does not make the demand disappear. They produced real consequences, altered relations, and left definite traces. Even after losing its speaker, responsibility continues to operate autonomously.

Here responsibility ceases to be a moral command issuing from an individual's interiority and turns into a "naturalized fiction" for keeping reality in operation. It is a condition that was already embedded deep in society as the "company" — that nonhuman modern subject — was taking shape in Japan. Shida Tosō's claimed founding year of 1874 is situated within that process of institutional formation.

Here a paradox arises. Responsibility does not exist because someone takes it on. The order is rather the reverse: the event happens first, and the demand for a response remains afterward on the side of the event, belonging to no one. The "subject who takes it on" is not the cause of responsibility but a result, sought out after the fact, once responsibility is already operating.

In #04 I wrote that fiction becomes real not by being believed, but by being responded to. But something that becomes real through being responded to does not stop there. It begins, itself, to demand the next response. When that demand hangs in the air with no one determined to answer it — that is what we call responsibility.

We do not act because we are free. We are already thrown into a world where action happens. Only at that point does the word "responsibility" rise up, belatedly, after the event.
